New York Times Speaker Series

The New York Times Speaker Series is an annual event hosted by the Office of Global Learning Initiatives. It offers students, faculty, staff, and community members the opportunity to attend a keynote lecture by a New York Times journalist. Held during the spring semester, this engaging event provides participants with firsthand insight into global topics from leading journalists covering stories that shape our world.

Defining Moments: Building a Career in Political Journalism

In this New York Times Speaker Series event, Carlos Lozada, opinion columnist at The New York Times and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism, will reflect on the defining moments that shaped his path in political journalism. Drawing on his experience as a senior editor and book critic at The Washington Post and as managing editor of Foreign Policy, he will offer an inside look at how journalists build authority, credibility, and intellectual range in a rapidly evolving media landscape. Attendees can expect an engaging and thoughtful conversation on mentorship, resilience, intellectual curiosity, and the choices that shape a meaningful career in political journalism.

Carlos Lozada is an opinion columnist at the New York Times and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism. He is the author of What Were We Thinking: A Brief Intellectual History of the Trump Era and The Washington Book: How to Read Politics and Politicians. Previously, he was a senior editor and book critic at the Washington Post and the managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine. In 2024, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science.
